Malaysian driver Alex Yoong might like driving with a roof over his
head after a dominant performance in the Macau Asia Porsche Carrera Cup race.
Yoong started the race in third position after a disappointing qualifying, but
soon worked his way up to the top spot after the start.
On lap three Yoong started to experience gearbox problems that plagued him for
the rest of the ten lap race, but he held off Hong Kong natives Charles Kwan and
Matthew Marsh for the victory.
"It was quite difficult in the hills as I had some problems with gear selection
but the car was good through the last two corners before the straight and that
kept Charles and Matthew behind," Yoong said.
Kwan finished 1.186 seconds behind Yoong who was the only driver running a 2002
spec Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car as opposed to the rest of the field running the
current 2003 version.
Yoong after his Macau victory will head over to Australia for the Bathurst 24
Hour race next weekend. Yoong will compete for the S.A.E team in a BMW 320i.
"The weekend was thoroughly enjoyable, the race was good and the results
satisfying," Yoong said about his Macau triumph. "The weekend is useful as my
pre-Bathurst tune-up. I'm looking forward for next week's great race at Mount
Panorama."
Yoong raced 14 Grands Prix for the Minardi F1 team during the 2001 and 2002
Formula 1 seasons. His best result was a seventh place in the Australian Grand
Prix.
