2003 Infiniti FX35 & FX45 Road Test

2-11-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

This brings to light another point Infiniti deserves kudos for. Driver's who would rather opt for the lighter more fuel efficient V6 over the more powerful V8 are not penalized with fewer options. Load both models up with maximum goodies and the only differentiating factor is the motor. And the six is no slouch, offering more punch than some V8s while getting a respectable 14.3 / 10.0 L/100 km (20 / 28 mpg) city / highway rating compared to the V8's 15.9 / 11.2 L/100 km (18 / 25 mpg). The BMW, on the other hand, delivers 14.7 / 10.8 L/100 km city / highway in automatic equipped 6-cylinder trim and 16.4 / 11.9 with its 4.4-L V8.

But all this BMW versus Infiniti talk shouldn't by any means relay that the BMW is a poorly made vehicle. Quite the opposite is true. It's been at the top of its category for years now, and with respect is finally ready for an update. The FX surprises in that it beats the X5 at its own game, driving dynamics. Will BMW rest on its laurels calmly watching the new upstart boast this claim? Not too likely. Expect an even more advanced X5 in the near future.
