2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Road Test

Speaking of imports Jeep sells this model in Europe, where it is considered a status symbol similar to the Range Rover, and that from a continent that ironically uses the Mercedes-Benz E-Class for taxi service, go figure.

Other than the vague steering I have a few complaints though. First, while the torquey V8 makes it a blast to drive and the addition of the Overland's 5-speed automatic transmission improves efficiency, the Grand Cherokee goes through more fuel than I would be willing to pay for on a daily basis. Fortunately it only uses regular grade unleaded. Personally I'd like to see a turbodiesel variant, along the lines of the Italian built 2.8-L unit going into the soon to be face-lifted Liberty. A diesel's high torque would be perfectly suited to the heavier Grand Cherokee while its cleaner particulate emissions and improved fuel economy is kinder to the environment and pocketbook.

Second, for such a large vehicle I would appreciate a third row of seats. With my family soon growing to five, and the prospect of two child seats and one sturdily sized ten year old splitting the middle position, I six or seven-seater is a must. We'll have to wait and see if Jeep chooses to outfit its 2005 Grand Cherokee replacement with rear jump seats as in the all-new Durango. Consider this my personal request.

Other than these two minor quibbles I have nothing to chirp about. Its extremely subtle 2004 grille and front fascia modifications that will be missed by the majority of passersby do nothing to spoil the Cherokee's dashing good looks - a good thing. The rest of the body still looks fresh considering its age, with a rakish windshield leading into an expansive greenhouse, and finally downward via a steeply sloped liftgate. Its fender swells are muscular and wheel wells filled with P235/65R17 tires and elegantly styled chrome alloy wheels.
