2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Road Test

11-23-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

If you haven't heard the news a completely revised 2005 model will transform the aging Jeep into a 21st century SUV by way of dramatic changes in styling and engineering. Attractive circular headlamp clusters join a revised 7-slat grille, bolder pillars frame what seems to be a narrower greenhouse, similar to the upcoming Dodge Magnum in rear-three-quarter-view, and new angular taillights appear more modern.

Is it better looking than the current model? That'll be something you'll have to decide for yourself. Personally, I think the 2004 Grand Cherokee is one of the best looking SUVs on the road, and extremely hard to top. The new model is different, which is important, and attractive in its own right. But I won't go as far to say it looks better.

The engineering changes will be the addition of an independent front suspension, good news for on-pavement stability. Some 4x4 diehards will complain that it won't perform as well off-road as the current version, but to Jeep's credit the best in class Liberty is equal, or at the very least a close second to the old Cherokee in the tough stuff. I expect the same "Trail Rated" capability from the next-generation Grand Cherokee.

There shouldn't be too many complaints when news about Jeep's first application of Chrysler Group's 5.7-L HEMI V8 gets out, it'll go like stink while providing improved emissions and fuel consumption.

When the 2005 model gets introduced in just over a month at the Detroit auto show I'll make sure and do a full review. Then you can make up your mind to wait for the all-new version or buy up the last of the old before it's too late.
