2004 Land Rover Range Stormer Concept

3-6-2004

by Justin Couture , Canadian Auto Press

Surprisingly the Range Stormer uses two oversized doors instead of the usual four, which have been hinged to open forwards and upward Lamborghini style, allowing easy access without needing two parking spaces to open fully. When the doors are ajar, a hinged running board automatically drops down giving passengers a sure-footed entry point - an idea borrowed from the

once-PAG sibling Lincoln Navigator. The frameless doors, that also feature no handles, definitely attract the auto show crowds, but don't expect anything similar on upcoming Land Rover production vehicles. To balance out the design and on-road performance the Range Stormer rides on 22-inch forged alloy wheels.

Unlike the current Land Rover lineup the Range Stormer promises to live up to the "sport" in sport utility. To compete with its rivals, not to mention contend with the model's boxy aerodynamics and heavy curb weight, the new concept features a version of Jaguar's 4.2-liter supercharged V8 that produces 370 horsepower. It's the same engine that's utilized in the XJR, XKR and S-Type R, and makes perfect sense after considering the prospect of tuning the BMW-sourced 4.4-liter V8 found in the Range Rover (which was no doubt not available for this project) or the antiquated overhead-valve unit in the Discovery. Though the Range Stormer should be quick, don't expect it to achieve the high five-second zero to 100 km/h times of the Cayenne Turbo. More realistically, expect it to perform in the mid-sixes. Power flows through a ZF 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with sequential manual shift mode - I suppose it would be silly to expect such a large and luxurious vehicle with a manual gearbox.
