2004 Nissan Titan Quick Drive

12-4-2003

by Joseph Cabadas , Canadian Auto Press

There truck offers several interesting features too, such as the King Cab's rear swinging half-sized doors that open nearly 180 degrees, offering better access to the rear seat than any other full-size pickup. Nissan's reasoning for this feature is that the driver won't feel "trapped" between two doors. While this is an added selling feature, I don't think it will make or break someone's desire to buy a Titan instead of another pickup.

This 5-foot, 7-inch box on the back of the new 2004 Nissan Titan Crew Cab pickup truck comes equipped with a factory-applied spray-in bedliner along with the optional utility bed package that has C-channels with an aluminum divider and tie-down cleats. (Photo: Joe Cabadas, Canadian Auto Press)

Its Utili-track channel system might though, allowing the truck bed to be equipped with any number of optional accessory racks, trays, dividers, modular storage systems or just a convenient way to adjust the tie down cleats. Here I can see a definite competitive advantage to Nissan for providing this factory installed option because it adds enourmous flexibility to the bed plus the added peace of mind that you're not violating your vehicle's warranty by adding aftermarket products that may or may not be suited to your vehicle.

The bed is also equipped with tailgate illumination, supposedly a first in this segment, and a bed-mounted 12-volt utility outlet (I wonder if you could get more than one outlet to plug in multiple power tools?).

Nissan says it has 3,568 L (126 cubic feet) of space in its Crew Cab--which is more than other half-ton crew cab models. The extra 28 L (1 cubic foot) of space, over an F-150, however, is located behind the power adjustable brake and accelerator pedals. I tested this by stretching my foot back behind the pedals and there is this extra room. Still, how does this area provide for extra passenger comfort or interior cargo carrying capacity? Maybe it is just enough dead space to reduce lower leg injuries in a crash? Or possibly just to brag about extra space? Nissan wouldn't say.
