2008 BMW M3 Sedan Review

7-28-2008

by Michel Deslauriers , Auto123.com

Even the 135i is quicker off the line, although the M3 catches up afterwards. The dual-clutch transmission that is now offered will undoubtedly make the car even quicker.

This test car is equipped with the optional Electronic Damper Control (EDC).

On the other hand, if you don't drive the M3 like it was meant to be, you'll end up with a fuel economy average similar to what we've observed, which is 12.5 L/100 km; that's pretty good considering its power output.

On the road, the stiff suspension can become irritating, but happily, this test car is equipped with the optional Electronic Damper Control (EDC); the system has three settings, and under normal driving, say, with the family on board, you can really feel a difference when the EDC is in Comfort mode. I strongly recommend this option.

Hot controls inside
Testing the M3 during a particular hot week gives us a chance to verify how efficient the air conditioning system is, and it provides the necessary cold air to keep the cabin cool; you can also program a timer that will continue to ventilate the cockpit for 30 minutes after we leave the car.

Climb in the M3 when it's really hot, though, and you'll literally burn your hand on the titanium iDrive knob.

Not much changes inside in the metamorphosis from 3-Series to M3. Some drivers did complain that they couldn't get comfortable in the power seats, while others with smaller hands felt the steering wheel was too fat.

The dash and door panels are nicely finished, but lack a little visual excitement, which goes for many BMW models. Function over form, as they say. But I'm even starting to get used to the iDrive, and the more I use it, the easier it is, yet it's still a distraction while driving.
