Competition
The least-expensive M3 is the sedan, and the 2008 version starts out at $69,900. Our test car also carried the $3,600 Executive Package, the $3,200 MDrive Package (iDrive, navigation), the $2,000 19-inch alloy wheels and tires as well as the aforementioned $2,000 EDC. Total price is $80,700. The M3 has some serious rivals, though:

Audi RS 4, 420 hp, $94,200
Lexus IS F, 416 hp, $64,400
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, 451 hp, $63,500

The RS 4 is about to be retired in its current form, which can no longer compete because if its high price. And the Cadillac CTS-v will be back this fall, flaunting no less than 550 horsepower. The new M3 benefits from a drop in price compared to the outgoing models, but it's still a few thousand dollars more expensive than the Lexus and the Mercedes.

M3 will provide its owner with a high level of performance, as long as the high price doesn't matter to them.

Conclusion
For someone who doesn't yet own an M3, there's plenty to like in the new-generation model. Bursting with technology and packing a roaring V8 engine, it will provide its owner with a high level of performance, as long as the high price doesn't matter to them.

The M3 has also learned a few manners, which may or may not please previous-generation M3 owners, as they like their machines raw and with plenty of attitude. Personally, I think the new car still has its charm that makes it so desirable, and it will remain a cult car.
