2008 Mazda5 GT Review

5-14-2008

Upgraded equipment
The 5-speed autobox is one of the key additions for 2008.
Barely two years after its introduction, the Mazda5 is already getting updated with new features. This move was made necessary by the arrival of a close competitor, the Kia Rondo.

The new model sports the same familiar styling, although the grille and bumpers have been slightly revised. The 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels boast a new design, while the high-end GT model now features exclusive LED taillights.

The interior is also improved. Armrests were added to the front passenger seat (left side) and to the second-row seats (outward side). The gauges on the dashboard now benefit from electroluminescent backlighting, while the new stereo is compatible with MP3 players.

Two new exterior colors are available: Golden Sand and Brilliant Black. Both can be ordered with the cloth-covered seats of the GS model and the leather-appointed seats of the GT model. The leather upholstery, by the way, comes with front heated seats.

Furthermore, the Mazda5 GT now features automatic climate control, including rear air vents with fan-speed control. Its audio unit is combined with Bluetooth connectivity and, for the first time, a navigation system is optionally available. Unfortunately, the touch-screen display proves hard to read on a bright shiny day.

Finally, a 5-speed autobox!
The 2008 Mazda5 shares its 5-speed automatic transmission with the Mazda3 Sport. The first gear is longer, helping the unit deliver smoother, more flexible takeoffs. At high speed, this autobox allows a more subtle engine operation. According to the automaker, it also contributes to a 2-percent improvement in fuel economy over the 2007 model.

My series of tests with the automatic-equipped Mazda5 GT yielded an average of 10.5 L/100 km over 500+ kilometers of city-highway driving. I should point out that a 5-speed manual transmission is still standard. I particularly liked its precise throws.

The Mazda5 accommodates up to 6 passengers.
