2008 Mazda5 GT Review

5-14-2008

by Luc Gagné , Auto123.com

The heart of a Mazda3 Sport
The Mazda5 again shares its 153-hp 4-cylinder engine with the Mazda3 Sport hatchback. This 2.3L mill might not deliver spirited accelerations, but it perfectly suits a family-oriented vehicle like this one. Reaching 100 kph takes about 10 seconds.

Because it's the only engine choice, potential buyers may be tempted to look at Kia, which offers a selection of two different powerplants with the Rondo: a 162-hp 4-cylinder and a sportier though thirstier 182-hp V6.

Unlike the Kia Rondo, the Mazda5 offers ultra-convenient sliding doors.

4+2
Mazda defines the 5 as a 6-passenger vehicle. True, there are three rows of seats, but the third one is not suitable for any adult; indeed, you won't find enough room for your legs and feet. So, much like the old Jaguar E-Type was a 2+2 sedan, the Mazda5 should be labelled a "4+2" minivan, meaning it can sit four adults and two children.

The versatile interior is easy to transform. The rear bench features a 50/50 split and it folds flat in a flash. When all the rear seats are folded, the available cargo room increases from 112 to 857 liters.

That's large enough to load cumbersome packages. However, the Kia Rondo has a total cargo capacity of 2,083 liters. Of course, it does not have the convenient sliding doors of the Mazda5, which make access much easier in tight spots (like parking lots). Also, just like the Dodge Grand Caravan, once the doors are open, they lock so as to avoid closing accidentally.

Pleasant driving experience
The driving dynamics of the Mazda5 are comfort-oriented. The suspension is effective at masking road imperfections. The steering is both light and precise, while the four-wheel disc brakes deliver progressive, linear stops. ABS is standard fare, but there is no traction control available, which is a shame, especially for winter driving.

On the road, this minivan is predictable and comfortable.
