Did you know that automakers actually listen to their customers? It might take several years and a lot of patience, but it happens. General Motors proved it by finally bringing over a European-based compact car with more than charmingly dynamic qualities: the Saturn Astra.

The arrival of this compact on our shores proves that some automakers actually listen to their customers.

And we're not talking merely about a name or shape; GM made virtually no compromises and kept as many characteristics of the European Astra as possible. This is true not only in Canada but also in the United States.

Wisdom and boldness
The North American Astra should prove to be as successful and popular among driving enthusiasts and fans of the original, euro-flavored model. GM boldly chose to offer the Astra as a hatchback only.

Indeed, the all-new 2008 Astra comes in 3- and 5-door configurations, even south of the border where consumers are less fond of this bodystyle. What's more, GM is energetically and brazenly marketing the Astra as a "premium" compact that stands out from cheaper competitors thanks to a unique personality and a long list of standard features.

The exterior styling is clean -- sleek, but not simplistic. Traditional Saturn design cues were used, such as the front grille, but the Astra did not lose its European flair. Inside, there are even more reasons to be impressed. The spongy plastic dashboard is more sharply executed than that of most rivals. The layout, in itself, is devoid of extravagance, yet it has a unique, unparalleled character. Here, I must admit that GM clearly hit the target, if not the bull's eye.
