2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK First Impressions

2-24-2008

by Luc Gagné , Auto123.com

LED-equipped side mirrors now feature arrow-shaped turn signal indicators. Moreover, they were made larger to make up for the lack of rearward visibility when the hardtop is in place. Finally, all the alloy wheels are new designs.

The list of features is seemingly endless, as was expected.

A becoming interior

Inside, owners will find a new 12-button three-spoke steering wheel and a new gauge cluster with red needles and chrome surrounds. A leather- and wood-trimmed steering wheel is optionally available. Also, for the first time ever, the company's "Linguatronic" voice-operated control system for the audio, phone and navigation system can be ordered with the SLK.

Nostalgic fans of the old 300 SL will be able to select the new leather seats in "Gullwing red". More conservative buyers, on the other hand, will likely appreciate the new Prehnite green metallic paint, a rich yet understated color exclusive to the SLK.

My favorite option remains the AIRSCARF system integrated to the head restraints, which blows warm air around the neck and head for increased comfort in colder temperatures. As the name suggests, it literally feels like wearing a scarf. Nice...

New direct-steer system
The 2009 SLK offers another innovative feature that should not be overlooked. In fact, aggressive drivers will definitely like it. It's called the direct-steer variable-assist steering system.

Instead of using complex electronics, this system is purely mechanical. It delivers a quicker steering response on city streets or on winding roads while also providing light steering effort when parking. Revised gearing in the steering rack allows the steering gear ratio to change in tune with the steering angle, while at the central position, an indirect ratio provides surer straight line stability. As a result, the number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock has been reduced by about 25 percent, making the SLK remarkably nimble and easy to drive.

Winding roads are pure delight behind the wheel of this car.
