2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK First Impressions

2-24-2008

A few irritants
This little roadster from Mercedes does not come without flaws. For one, the significant 10.5-meter turning radius hampers the maneuverability of the car, which only stands 4.1-meter long, especially in tight spaces like parking lots. Making matters worse is the limited rearward visibility when the roof is up.

Some elements of the new SLK should have been more carefully thought out...

Also, the cupholders in the middle of the dashboard can become pretty annoying: they're so high above the navigation screen that any bottle you put there will impede your visual field (see picture). Come on, Mercedes...

Last but not least, I'm having a hard time understanding why the volume of the navigation system's voice commands is linked to the stereo's. For example, if you don't like a certain song and decide to turn down the volume, the charming voice of the electronic guiding lady is barely audible... and you end up missing the exit you were supposed to take! This "virtual hostess" should be more independent.

Then again, you don't buy a roadster like this one for its cupholders or GPS. The SLK's sexy lines and fascinating performance are enough to conquer the heart of any potential buyer.
