Felipe Massa of the Scuderia Ferrari and Heikki Kovalainen of the McLaren-Mercedes team set today the fastest time in the first two free practice sessions of the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Silverstone.

Brazil's Felipe Massa emerged fastest in the morning, but was the victim of a high-speed crash that damaged his F2008. Kovalainen proved the strong form of the McLarens are by setting the second fastest time ahead of his teammate, Lewis Hamilton.

During the afternoon session, Kovalainen set the fastest lap around the daunting Silverstone circuit on new tires. He then continued testing his McLaren in race condition on used tires. Mark Webber, Hamilton and David Coulthard followed him in order.

Jarno Trulli (Toyota) and Kazuki Nakajima (Williams) crashed hard during the afternoon. Massa had to wait for a while until his Ferrari was repaired. He returned in action but spun twice, luckily avoiding the wall this time.
