Brad Keselowski said an on-time flight, Friday, from Pocono, Pa. helped put him in Victory Lane at the Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday night.
That flight got him to Nashville in time to practice for the race. "It's quite simple: If I didn't come here (Friday), I don't think I would've won the race," Keselowski explained.
The Penske Racing driver lead 97-laps of the 225 lap NASCAR Nationwide Series race beating “Concrete Carl” Edwards by 1.67 seconds. Paul Menard, another Sprint Cup regular finished third.
The race winner and other Sprint Cup “double-duty” drivers faced a 700-mile return flight to make Sunday’s race.
“It’s still physically demanding. I’m sure I’ll do a lot of sleeping on the way to Pocono,” Keselowski, who drove a Dodge, added. “When I’m sitting in the plane, I don’t think, ’Oh, man, I can’t believe I’ve got to fly to Nashville.’ I’m thinking, ’Oh, wow, I can’t believe somebody is paying me to drive in Nashville.’”
It was his third win of the year, and he extended his points lead to 196 over Kyle Busch who has left the series to concentrate on the Sprint Cup title full-time.
His closest rival is Carl Edwards who is now 277 back, but, not all that unhappy with a runner-up finish.
“It was a good battle,” Edwards said. “I needed one more reset to try and work Brad, and have a chance at it, but his car was faster and he did a really good job driving it. I was thinking about that guitar (the race trophy) a little bit in the middle of the race. It felt good to be that close to a win.”
