A faster, more balanced urban scooter

The Kymco People S 125 falls into what I like to call the "other" type of scooter. In Canada, we're used to small-wheel machines, but in Europe and Asia, a different breed of scooters, inspired from engine-powered bicycles, recalls the famous mopeds of yesteryear.

This type of scooter, highly popular in Europe, is starting to make a presence over here.

This type of scooter offers an upright yet comfortable riding position and, thanks to 16-inch aluminum wheels, enhanced stability and safety. Sitting at the helm of this vehicle feels more natural.

Quiet engine
The 124.6-cc, 4-stroke, single-cylinder that powers this Kymco has a unique quality seldom seen on small-displacement engines: it's fairly quiet, even under hard acceleration. With 10.4 horsepower on tap, sprints are commendable; you can easily cruise at up to 90 kph, even when going uphill. Top speed is rated at 100 kph. In my opinion, this kind of performance is characteristic of a metropolitan scooter: you can ride on the service lane of a boulevard, but not on the highway. It's more than capable for street riding, though. The engine and continuously variable transmission make a wonderfully smooth and efficient couple.

Ergonomics
The 166 kilos are nicely distributed, so you don't have any problems parking it on its center or side stand. The soft, contoured seat feels as if you were sitting on a bicycle. My only complaint is the bulge in the middle: depending on your size and the length of your legs, you might be tempted to sit farther back.

The instrument cluster is well laid out and easy to read. Likewise, the controls are ergonomically positioned for easy manipulation. Finally, the mirrors are conveniently located to help you see other vehicles more quickly.
