2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class First Impressions (video)

Two V6 engines only
Mercedes-Benz Canada and its parent company have decided to offer two engines only: the 3-liter V6, producing 228 hp, and the 3.5-liter V6, producing 268 hp. The former will be available standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the latter will only be delivered with a 7-speed automatic transmission (optional on the 3-liter engine). But let's be realistic! Only a few C300s with manual transmission will be imported into the country. I have to say, I miss the famous 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine: it was solid, reliable, and very fuel efficient. We won't be seeing any diesel engines for the next two years either, because our neighbours to the south have established their own particular pollution control standards to avoid an invasion of modern, efficient European diesel engines.

The 3.5-litre V6 offers 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The 3-liter V6 can use ethanol fuel (E-85 flex-fuel), but is already quite efficient, with fuel consumption estimated at 9.9 L/100km. At 115km/h on the highway, we can easily expect 8.5 L/100km, maybe even better. Mercedes has a good reputation when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Roomier
One of the great advantages of the new C-Class is the interior's improved layout. It is much more comfortable. The engineers have created more space for both front and back passengers, and even at 6 feet tall, one can't complain in the back seat. The front seats provide good support. As a driver, I liked the dashboard's trim as the matt finish does not reflect in the windshield. My passenger, on the other hand, didn't think it was up to Mercedes's posh standards. He also disliked the sharp door lock button.

The controls are practical and easy to use. Mercedes-Benz has given its C-Class an electronic selector in the center console, replacing several command buttons. It works like a computer mouse and is very user-friendly.

Finally: a clear screen
The (optional) navigation system's new 7-inch screen is fantastic. I'm not a believer in these systems, as they easily distract drivers and force them to take their eyes off the road long enough to read the information. But this time I was delighted by the well positioned, easily readable, retractable screen. My passenger was impressed by the memory card that can be inserted into the audio/video system. The standard C-Class sedans are already equipped with a quality sound system, but music lovers can opt for the ambiophonic Harman/Kardon Logic 7 system and transform their cockpit into a concert hall.

The 7-inch screen is positioned high enough so it is not hazardous to consult.
