2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class First Impressions (video)

Handling
Even if the brass at M-B Canada prefer the sport package, they were conscious of the state of Canadian roads. The new C-Class cars, with the sport package, offer a good compromise between comfort and handling. This is for the most part due to the new shock absorbers. A valve sets and controls the shock absorber's range of movement. When accelerating out of a tight curve, the valve closes to harden the suspension. We were able to test this out both on the road and on the track.

The rearview mirrors create turbulences that are audible in the cockpit.

On secondary roads, we found the cars docile and comfortable, predictable and sure. The standard acceleration skid control system was obviously a factor. These cars are a joy to drive on the highway. Designed for countries with much higher speed limits, they offer excellent stability. The only negative aspect is the wind noise generated by the large rear-view mirrors, which are nevertheless quite useful. The brakes are sure and constant. I was also impressed by the steering. More precise, it conveyed the road conditions and the direction of the wheels very well.

Performance
I preferred the C350 with its more responsive engine, which gave me extra confidence when passing or on the track. Both versions are great on the highway, but when it's time to pass another car, I like to count on that extra power. The preliminary numbers I have seen, however, don't necessarily back up my impressions: the C300 goes from 80 to 120km/h in 5 seconds, and the C350, in 4.3 seconds, both good results. I have noticed that the automatic transmission is quicker and more efficient in the C350, which might have influenced my impressions. My acceleration data (0 to 100km/h) corresponds to that of the manufacturer: 6.4 seconds with the C350 and 7.3 with the C300, both with automatic transmission. As for braking, I would like to test the cars again. A complete emergency stop from 100km/h took 39 meters with the C350 and 43 meters with the C300.

A good vintage
That's how I would summarize this first contact with the new C-Class models. The interior is roomy and comfortable. The cars handle well and instill confidence in the driver. Decidedly modern, the 2008 vintage offers more space and more driving pleasure.
