2004 Malibu MAXX Preview

4-19-2003

by Trevor Hofmann , Canadian Auto Press

The first class, coach analogy has been used many times before, but the new Chevy offers a few features to back up their marketing lingo. First are rear seats that slide back and forward a total of 178 mm (7.0 in), either increasing legroom or cargo capacity depending on needs. Of course the rear seatbacks are split, 60/40 in this case, but in order to allow passengers to add legroom separately, the seat cushions are split as well.

The seatbacks recline too, important for taller passengers who might find their hair brushing the headliner. Altogether there's 3,002 L (106 cu ft) of passenger volume - impressive. Cargo volume is a very acceptable 646 L (22.8 cu ft), about 50% larger than many midsize sedans trunk space. The cargo shelf offers multilevel positioning to optimize carrying capacity, while the front passenger seatback folds forward creating a flat loading surface for up to 2,743 mm (9.0 ft) of loading space. A 12-volt rear power outlet makes the rear shelf perfect for camp cooking, targeting the 'needs' of the young family outdoor lifestyle.

While relaxing in the back, passengers will appreciate the standard rear glass sunroof, or skylight in GM-speak, an upscale touch in a commoner's ride. The fixed panel features a sunshade to block rays when the sun is at its peak, important for infants and toddlers especially.

On a more practical note the rear-seat occupants get their own heating and air-conditioning system, with individual ventilation to the feet. In addition dual vents on center dash "turbo blast" air all the way to the rear seats.
