system that doesn't require the use of a key or even a key fob when entering the car or when engaging the ignition. A remote sensor picks up a digital code within the remote fob that could be in your purse or pocket, unlocks the doors and prepares the ignition to start the engine. Just a quick flick of the column mounted switch turns over the starter, and you're away. Suzuki calls its system SmartPass, and it truly raises the ownership experience to premium levels.

Multiple airbags are starting to become more common in small SUVs, due to concerns buyers have about rollovers - a problem some sport utilities have experienced due to high centres of gravity, off-road rated tires and suspension setups that are geared for 4x4 use. If driven at regular highway speeds, and perhaps even slightly over posted limits, there aren't any SUVs on the market today that will pose a problem unless severe accident avoidance maneuvers are needed, and if such is the case for the new Grand Vitara it should manage quite well due to standard electronic stability control - a feature that manipulates the ABS-enhanced front-wheel disc, rear-drum brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, also standard, to pull a wayward vehicle back in the direction the steering wheel

is pointed. Of course, the driver would need to be pointing the steering wheel towards the correct lane in order to avoid a collision, which might be expecting a lot considering the modicum of training needed to procure a license, and that's where the Grand Vitara's full load of airbags come in handy. Eight are standard, including smart dual-stage frontal airbags for driver and front passenger, plus a side-impact airbag for each front occupant. Also, all outboard occupants front and rear are protected by side curtain-type airbags. Rear passengers, which are often children who could potentially be harmed by frontal and regular side-impact airbags, depending on their design, get the curtain bags as well as three-position seatbelts at each seating position, and of course, the LATCH system for attaching child safety seats. Incidentally, traction control is also standard.
