off-road prowess. While the entire experience is enhanced by seats that are not only comfortable but also offer excellent lateral support, the SUV's grip on the road has as much to do with the Grand Vitara's fully-independent suspension system, which incorporates MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link setup in the rear, as it does its 50:50 weight distribution, nicely weighted power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system, optional 225/65R17 all-season tires, and lest I forget, fully-integrated frame.

that? In this respect Suzuki has taken a cue from Land Rover, but not the legendary British company's lightweight Freelander. No, the superb midsize LR3, which incidentally starts at over $60,000, features a frame integrated within a monocoque body shell. This gives Land Rover and Suzuki's latest off-roaders the benefits of a unibody design, which include tighter body construction (fewer squeaks and rattles), improved crash protection and better ride and handling characteristics, plus the attributes of body-on-frame construction, which are enhanced off-road capabilities, as well as heavier load carrying and towing properties. So, in a nutshell the new Grand Vitara handles both paved curves and off-road obstacles with grace and composure.
